Microcurrent Facial – The Health Benefits, Side Effects And Should I Get One?

What is Foreo Bear?
Bear is a hand-held low voltage microcurrent facial toning device that uses tiny almost imperceptible electric shocks to tone, wake up and improve your skin. This device also has Foreo’s T-Sonic pulsations, a vibration mode meant to “extend deep into your pores to increase circulation, eliminate toxins & ease facial tension, resulting in smoother, softer, glowier skin.”
Overall the promise is a workout for your face. You use the Foreo app to guide your workouts and the device must be used with a conductive serum, gel or cream.
Foreo’s hydrating SERUM SERUM SERUM is what’s recommended to safely transfer the microcurrent from BEAR to your skin, but you can use other water-based products if you prefer, and Foreo doesn’t recommend using oils with it.
What is Microcurrent technology?
Microcurrent treatments have been used since the 1970s and employ low voltage electricity across the surface of the skin to promote cell growth in skin and to stimulate muscle, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) cell growth, and collagen development . The procedure is meant to be noninvasive, and painless. Some estheticians say these treatments have immediate benefits with absolutely no recovery time. Spas and estheticians have been offering these facials as professional treatments for some time.
How to use Foreo Bear?
Bear can be used daily, and that’s what I did for about two weeks – each night before I went to bed. It’s not recommended to use it more than once in a 24 hour period.
To use it, you’ll need the Foreo app. Turn the device on and connect to it in the app.
You can choose to use just the microcurrent, and you can adjust its intensity, or add in the T-Sonic pulsations.
You need to start with a clean face so wash up first
When you hit start you’ll be instructed to apply the gel or serum and you must apply some cream or gel for proper electrical conductivity; apply a thin layer before using BEAR or BEAR mini & massage it in.
What does Foreo Bear feel like?
I started with both the micro current and the T-sonic pulsations on. The vibration is fairly low, and the microcurrent was almost undetectable; there are some spots on my face I could feel it more like my hairline and nose area, but it really felt like a tingling more than a zapping. The treatment lasts about 2 minutes.
For a while I was wondering if it was really on or working… then I accidentally touched it to my earring and got a very tiny zap. It’s definitely on!
BEAR’s shape seems designed to get the current into all your facial curves & contours. The device itself is rechargeable and made of silicone with metal nubs.
Did I notice a difference after using Foreo Bear?
In short, I’m surprised to say I did. I wasn’t expecting much, but I feel like my skin is a bit firmer, tighter and clearer., especially along my jawline. I notice a glow that I think is new. I haven’t been wearing a lot of makeup over the last 5 months thanks to working from home, but just in the last 2-3 weeks I really feel like the overall look is improved. I’d say it took about two weeks of daily use to really notice results. I tried it with both the Foreo Serum and with my own regular serum and don’t think the Foreo serum is a must-have if you already have a product you like.
One oddity I did notice is that the pulsations don’t seem even across the face; they’re stronger on one side than the other when following the video guidance.
Even so, after my trial with Bear, I’m definitely going to keep using this device.
Battery life
BEAR & BEAR mini promise up to 90 uses per USB charge. After using it for 3 weeks I’m still going strong, but I’ll have to see the longevity yet.
Overall review
I’m pleased to say I think this device really worked and I was not expecting to notice much of a difference. I had never had a professional microcurrent facial before this so I can’t compare it to one, but I feel like after using Bear, my skin was firmer, tighter and had a nice glow to it.
Downsides? While I’ve seen some people report improvement after just one use, for me it took a couple of weeks. The price is also going to be a big downside for a lot of people, since it is an investment at $399CAD. The Foreo Serum is $79CAD
Overall I’m happy with the Bar as part of my nightly skincare routine and plan to keep using it.
