Apple Watch Series 4: What’s new?

Sadly, despite the rumours, the Apple Watch doesnt have a circular screen and the new model uses a rounded square shape once moreInstead, Apple has bumped the watch’s size and made some subtle but important tweaks to refine the design. The new Apple Watch 4 is available in 40mm and 44mm sizes. This makes the watch much wider than previous gen Apple Watches, which came in 38mm or 42mm options.

According to Apple COO Jeff Williams, the work means the 40mm versions screen is 35% larger and the 44mms display is 32% bigger. The company didnt say if either versionsresolution or max brightness has been increased.

Apples made a new Watch Face to help take advantage of the larger screens. It features eight newcomplications”. These let you change what the corner shows, letting you add shortcuts to things such as your favourite contacts, time zones you need to keep track of, or commonly used apps and services.

Theres also a new speaker that Apple claims is 50% louder than the Apple Watch 3s. The mic has also been moved to the opposite side of the watch to the speaker to reduce noise. This should be a boon for people that take calls on the watch or regularly use Siri.

As a bonus for people eyeing up the LTE version, Apple has also reworked the Watch 4s rear. The bottom of the Apple Watch 4 is now made of black ceramic and sapphire crystal. This is so radio waves can pass through the front and back for better cellular reception.

Under the hood, Apple has made a few more significant changes. For starters, it uses a new S4 dual-core 64-bit CPU that the company claims is twice as fast as its predecessor. But, more importantly, Apple’s added an ECG sensor to the watch. This, according to Apple is a world first for consumers. The new ECG sensor sits on the back and lets you take an electrocardiogram using the digital crown.

After 30 seconds, the ECG reading is made available complete with a rhythm classification. According to Apple, the ECG will be able to warn of Atrial Fibrillation (AFib), which is a heart condition that could lead to major health complications.

The standard heart rate monitor can now alert you if your heart rate is too low and youre health is at risk.

For regular runners, Apple has also improved the accelerometer and gyroscope. The sensors now have twice the dynamic range and can detect and read motion data eight times faster. As a result, the Watch can detect when you fall over. If no motion is detected after 60 seconds, the Watch can call emergency services automatically, as well as sending a message and location to emergency contacts.

Alongside these features, the Apple Watch 4 has everything that its predecessor had. You’ll get an integrated GPS, optional LTE connectivity and the same quoted 18-hour battery life as the Series 3.
