Call of Duty : Modern Warfare 2 is now playable on Xbox One and Xbox One X thanks to backward compatibility . Developed by Infinity Ward , the beloved first - person shooter first released for PS3 and Xbox 360 back in November 2009 , and has since gone down in history as one of the series ’ best .
Those with an original copy of the title can now insert it into their Xbox One and , after a short download , be back playing as Soap and friends like they never left . Multiplayer servers are still live , so you shouldn ’ t have any problems finding a game online , and we imagine this newfound compatibility will boost the player population .
However , Microsoft suddenly adding Modern Warfare 2 to its backward compatibility roster does cast doubt on the recently rumoured remaster . With the old version being available , it potentially pulls away from a remastered audience .
Related : Best PC Games Time will tell whether this rumour holds any truth , but we ’ d love to see a remaster in a similar vein to Modern Warfare Remastered , which looked lovely on modern tech .
Call of Duty : Black Ops 4 will launch without a solo campaign , opting instead to focus on multiplayer , zombies and battle royale . So , this remaster could fill a potential void once BLOPS 4 launches on October 12 .
