Microsoft is joining the Movies Anywhere party, bringing iTunes libraries to Xbox

Microsoft is seemingly about to rejoin Disney’s Movies Anywhere service, providing Xbox and Windows 10 users in the US easier access to flicks purchased from other online stores.

A now-deleted post on Microsoft’s website initially revealed that the Movies & TV app is about to integrate the Movies Anywhere cloud locker. That would mean films purchased from the likes of iTunes, Google Play, Amazon, Vudu and more could easily be played on the Xbox One or Windows 10 PC through the native app.

Likewise, movies purchased from the Microsoft Movies & TV app would be available on other devices via the Movies Anywhere app. This would restore the functionality lost when the pair parted ways last year.

Following its initial publication, a page confirming the tie-in was removed by Microsoft. This suggests the company jumped the gun with the announcement, rather than the information being incorrect in any way.

The Verge spotted the page on Monday and also grabbed the video below. After the page was removed, a spokesperson for Microsoft told Variety that it is in discussions with Movies Anywhere, but no accord has been struck yet.

On Microsoft Movies & TV, customers can rent or buy any of the nearly 200 thousand entertainment options to stream on their Xbox or Windows-based devices. Microsoft is committed to delivering rich entertainment experiences to our customers, and were in discussions with Movies Anywhere about bringing their service onboard.”

The idea behind the service is to enable users to access their digital movie collection regardless of where those films were purchased. The US-only platform is also backed by the major movie studios and offers access to digital copies of movies bundled with Blu-ray Discs.

Movies are available to stream and download for offline use, ensuring you’re never without your collection, even if there’s no connectivity.
