Obi-Wan Ke-NO-bi? New Star Wars Story spin-offs canned, report claims

Star Wars Obi Wan

Solo might be the last Star Wars Story spin-off for a while, according to reports this week.

Collider sources say Disney and Lucasfilm have decided to place plans for more standalone stories on hold until after 2019s Episode IX.

Thats despite recent reports have suggested eagerly-anticipated flicks based on timeless characters like Obi-Wan Kenobi (starring Ewan McGregor) and Bobba Fett were next in-line.

Todays updates suggests the studio big wigs are having second thoughts on proceeding based upon Solos well-publicised production problems and relatively lukewarm box office reception.

Ron Howard took over as director from mid-way through production, while reports claimed leading man Alden Ehrenreich required on-set acting coaches while reprising the role Harrison Ford made famous.

While the $84 million opening weekend domestically would be excellent by most films standards, it fell short of expectations. The second weekends takings dropped 65% to $29 million.

The films receipts were also down significantly on the $155m in domestic business Rogue One raked in over the first three days. Rogue One also suffered production issues calling for widespread reshoots, but the end results were largely considered to be superior to Solo, among the majority of critics.

Plenty to come

If futureStar Wars Storyspin-offs are being canned for now, that doesnt mean force fans will face a barren galaxy from here on in.

After Episode IX brings the third Skywalker trilogy to a close, therell be a new trio of of films from The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson and another separate series from Game of Thrones show runners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

These new films will be separate from both the episodic Skywalker saga and the recently-announced trilogy being developed by Rian Johnson, writer-director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” a press release said at the time.
